Query: How to meditate: how to practice meditation and celibacy for
enlightenment?
Vijay
Kumar: Before we discuss further on the topic of practicing meditation
and celibacy for gaining enlightenment... we need to know the meaning of meditation and
celibacy.
Meditation which means Yoga in Hindi was derived from the root word
"Yog". and Yog in Hinduism stands for synthesis between the two individualities. In plain terms two Yog two
means four. The process of our soul Atman trying to synthesize with Brahman, the Almighty Creator is known as
meditation yoga.
Simply speaking our atman the soul within... which is a part of the large
puzzle is always trying to merge with the whole puzzle. The sooner the bigger puzzle gets completed it is the
end of cosmos. Literally all souls' atmans in the cosmos have reached the kingdom of God. All souls' atmans
having purified themselves... the journey of the cosmos as a whole comes to an end. Next it is a new
beginning... a new cosmos which starts with a Big Bang.
The primary goal of all meditational practices is our soul atman reaching
the cosmic end goal of life... stage of enlightenment and finally salvation. Performed the right way... the
practice of meditation can lead to enlightenment within this life itself. Gaining enlightenment may not be
the goal of many in this life... but nonetheless the true seeker of spirituality yearns for gaining
enlightenment at the earliest.
No matter what... every meditational practice in the end leads to
enlightenment and finally salvation moksha.
The correct method of practicing meditation does not involve sitting in a
dark room and concentrating on the centre of a dimly lit bulb. That is not to be. A true seeker of
spirituality does not need a medium for practicing meditation. Sitting in the pranayama pose of Yoga we need
to concentrate on the correct form of breathing.
We need to understand that the breathing is done by our soul atman
residing in our heart. It is this soul atman which requires oxygen for its survival. Body being only an
instrument for our soul atman within... we need to perform to reach the end goal. By correctly concentrating
on the breathing... we can definitely reach the source of breathing and that is our soul atman
within.
The end goal of all forms of Yoga is reaching the end point of breathing. As we inhale and exhale oxygen... we
definitely shall reach the end goal one-day. Pranayama is considered as the king of all Yoga's. It is the only
route for reaching our soul atman within.
While sitting in the pranayama pose... it becomes difficult to close our
eyes and concentrate on something that is neither visible nor definable. Here we need to look back on the
back of the forefront portion between our eyes. While rhythmically inhaling and exhaling oxygen if we
concentrate all our energies between the center of our forehead between our eyes... we shall definitely reach
higher levels of Yoga in life.
Later on in life we can switch over to the Shavasana pose wherein lying
still like a dead body... we need to focus on our breath. and during this process we need to practice Neti
(not this, not this) as preached and advocated by Maharishi Ramana. The correct practice of Neti directly
leads to God Almighty. It is practicing Neti all the way lying in the Shavasana pose of Yoga that one reaches
the Nirvikalpa Samadhi stage.
All practices of meditation require one controlling the senses and the mind. Unless and until one establishes
absolute control over the five senses and the mind... any form of Yoga or meditation practiced by one may go waste.
and how do we establish control over the five senses and the mind. It is only Yoga meditation that shall help
establishing control over the five senses and the mind.
In other words... both the practice of Yoga meditation and establishing
control over the senses and the mind complement each other. It is a slow process as designed and destined by
God Almighty. In human form alone there are 1.1 million types of manifestations. To reach the end goal of
life in one life is a gigantic task.
Mahavira achieved it and so did Gautama Buddha. Subsequently Jesus Christ gained
enlightenment and followed him Prophet Mohammed. The task is Herculean but not unachievable.
Apart from practicing the right form of Yoga meditation and also Neti
(not this, not this)... one needs to practice control of celibacy in its entirety. It is as if we have to
garner all our energies for the final shot. Celibacy helps one preserve the cosmic quota of energy provided
to every human being every month.
Be one a man or woman... if we seek the end goal of spirituality...
practicing absolute celibacy is a must. We cannot just do without it. Those who indulge themselves in sexual
activity must not consider Yoga meditation as part of their life. Nonetheless, practice of Yoga meditation
leads to living a pure form of life. Our goal be spirituality or not... Yoga meditation always leads to
higher stages in life.
To reach the higher stages in spirituality... we need to establish firm
control over the flow of cosmic energy. This energy when channelised properly leads one to the top rung of
Spirituality. Sexuality in a way provides the final ingredient for one to reach stage of enlightenment. The
best practitioners of celibacy not only conserve their quota of cosmic energy every month but are also able
to transmute that energy to creative uses.
This control over celibacy leads one directly towards the abode of God. and absolute celibacy is required to be
practiced in continuation for a minimum period of 12 years if we are to reach stage of enlightenment within this
life. Does this mean that we cannot practice any sexual activity within this period? Yes, the abstinence of
sexuality for a continuous period of 12 years is an absolute necessity.
and what does celibacy truly mean? Is it only suppressing our sexual
urges or does it have an inherent implied meaning.
Yes, practicing celibacy simply does not mean abstinence from active
sexuality. Absolute Celibacy also includes practicing mental celibacy. It is not only in the physical term
itself that the sexual act is required to be negated but even mentally we have to consider every woman
existing on Mother Earth as representing our mother, sister or daughter. There can never be a fourth
relationship for a true seeker of spirituality.
The term sexuality encompasses a broader meaning. We need to understand that every man or woman is always a son and
daughter of God. Beyond this... there is no other relationship that can exist for one who needs to transcend beyond
the upper reaches of spirituality.
Practicing absolute celibacy is one of the most difficult tasks one comes
across. Gaining control over senses and the mind is comparatively easier. Still, most fail at this point.
Even the revered saint Vishwamitra could not contain himself seeing the sight of a beautiful maiden taking
bath in the forlorn jungles. He fell from grace only to realize that all the austere practices he had
mastered would have to be repeated all over again.
Acharya Rajneesh aka Osho also made the same mistake when he tried to
combine spirituality with sex.
In the domain of God... nothing moves by chance. All is ordered to the
last.
Furthermore, it need not be mentioned that vegetarian foods have a deep
impact on our thinking process. Consumption of vegetarian foods leads one towards a pious life. Where there
is a necessity and no other alternative... the tundra region where the extreme cold conditions forbid growth
of vegetarian foods... the intake of non vegetarian foods does not imbibe unhealthy thinking! Still,
consumption of vegetarian food is desirable.
We do not expect people from tundra region seeking spirituality in the first place. It is a situation of do and die
for them. Whenever possible one must not only consume vegetarian food but always remember... we live not to eat and
die but consume food so that our body may live!
